LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
After competing at the Stanford Invitational last weekend, LMU will head to UCLA as the UCLA track and field teams welcome over 1300 athletes and 30 schools, as well as numerous track clubs and world class competitors this Thursday through Saturday as they host the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium. The three-day meet features a heptathlon/decathlon competition, distance carnival and open and invitational events. The Lions will participate in only Friday and Saturday's events.
The men's 100m will open up the decathlon competition at 9:45 am on Thursday, while the heptathlon gets underway at 10:15 am with the high hurdles. The hammer will be contested on Thursday beginning at 4:00 pm with the women's competition, followed directly after by the men. On Friday, events get underway at 9:00 am with the sixth event of the decathlon, the 110m hurdles. The heptathlon long jump will begin at 10:00 am. Open field events will start at 1:00 pm with the women's shot put, while running event start at 2:00 pm with the women's high hurdles. The distance carnival will get underway at 6:00 pm with the women's steeplechase.
Saturday's invitational section of the meet will start at 10:45am in the field with the men's high jump. Running events will start at 12:15 pm with the women's 4x100m relay.
According to many teams involved, this year's meet looks to be the biggest and best in invitational history as some of the top collegiate and world performers will be competing.
At last week's Stanford Invitational, freshman Tara Erdmann qualified for the NCAA West Regional with a time of 16:47.45 in the 5000 meter run, racing in the fourth section at the Invite. Erdmann's fourth-place time in her section bested the Regional qualifying time of 16:52. The top-five runners at the West Regional will advance to the National stage later this year.
After the UCLA Invitational, LMU will head to the Mount San Antonio College Invitational/Relays on April 18 and 19 in Walnut, Calif.
