Track's Final Stretch Begins
Danielle Shanahan will race at the prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational.
LOS ANGELES - As the calendar flips to the month of May, the home stretch of the 2015 LMU outdoor track season regular season begins this weekend as the Lions compete at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational and the Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine.
Danielle Shanahan will be the lone Lion racing at the prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational, earning a spot into Saturday's 5,000m run. The sophomore enters the week with the 18th best time in the NCAA Division I West Region - a career low 16:12.54 mark she set on April 3 at the Stanford Invitational.
The remaining Lions competing this weekend will race Friday and Saturday in Irvine. Alexandra Young will compete in Friday night's (7:45 p.m.) women's 5k while Derek Weber and Mat Holton will race in the men's 5k on Friday (8:10 p.m.).
Michael Vorgitch, Michael Duncan and Grant Lapovich will take on the men's 3,000m steeplechase on Friday night (7:25 p.m.). Vorgitch enters the race with a season low time of 9:16.99, good for 82nd in the West Region. In 2014, the highest time to make the West Region field was 9:02.19.
On Saturday, seniors Grace Graham-Zamudio and Taylor Paschen will race in the women's 1,500m at 5:05 p.m. Competing for the men will be senior Daniel Gibson, junior Ryan Vargas and freshmen Waseem Radi and Nicolas Wells.
The top 48 declared marks in each event will qualify for the 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Regional which will be held May 28-30 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
