May 1, 2014
LOS ANGELES On April 17, 2014, LMU freshman Kyra Burke set a school record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Her time of 10:46.22 was not only a personal and LMU track record, but also the first step towards qualifying for the 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships July 5-6 in Eugene, Ore.
The LMU Sports Network sat down with the freshman from Kenmore, Wash., to discuss what attracted her to the steeplechase event, how exciting it would be to represent LMU at the Junior Nationals and what the remainder of the 2014 outdoor track season has in store for her.
Burke will take this weekend off from competition, but six of her fellow Lions will be in action at a pair of meets. Senior Dan Smith will compete for the final time in his career when he races in the 5k Friday night at the UCI Steve Scott Invitational. Meanwhile, Kevin Joerger, Chloe Curtis and Samantha Garcia will compete in the 1,500m at UCI on Sunday.
Seniors Weston Strum and Sheree Shea both gained entry to the prestigious Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Stanford University. The duo will compete in their respective 5k's on Sunday night.
