LOS ANGELES, Calif. - As the 2012-13 academic year comes to close, so to does the 2013 outdoor track season with just two weekends remaining to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. This weekend's trip to the Occidental Invitational will be the final meet of the regular season and the Lions are looking for it to be a record-setter.
LMU heads to Eagle Rock with five marks that rank in the top-48 nationally, putting them on pace to send four individuals to the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. It would set the program record, which was set with three women in 2010. In addition, Weston Strum (#23 in 5000-meter) and Kevin Joerger (#27 in 10,000-meter) hold two of those times that would send a male to the West Region for the first time ever in program history.
Another record within the Lions' sites at Occidental is to set the record for number of marks ranked in the top-100 in the West Region. The Lions set eight marks in the top-100 in 2011 by eight individuals. Heading into Occidental the Lions have seven in the top-100 with four others sitting on cusp of that mark, setting the stage for a big weekend at Occidental.
In addition to the five top-48 marks, Sarah Vitug is ranked 90th and Strum 62nd in their respective 1,500-meter fields. Hoping to crack the top-100 this weekend is Callie Mulgannon, who is 103rd in the 1,500, while Kevin Joerger (118th), Kelli Sugimoto (119th) and Brittnie Munoz (129th) will look to move up in the 5,000-meter.
"We're expecting great results from Oxy as it's the final meet of the "regular" season," said Head Coach Scott Guerrero. "Regional qualifiers and potential regional qualifiers will participate in a Last Chance meet next weekend (Sunday, May 12) also at Occidental. Monday, May 13 the final Descending Order list will be posted and declarations will open that week to finalize who ultimately makes it to Regionals."
