Five Lions Head to Georgia Tech Invite
LMU runners look to reach NCAA Regional qualifying marks
May 14, 2009
Five LMU runners will get their final shot at NCAA Regional qualification this weekend as they travel to the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, GA. Tara Erdmann, Lino Almeida, Trevor Wiseman, Megan Fairley, and Brian McDonald will be among 1,000 athletes from more than 65 teams competing at the meet, which begins Friday at Griffin Track.
Erdmann is the only Lion to have already qualified for the NCAA Regionals on May 29, having done so in the 5000m. This weekend, she will look to qualify in a second event, competing in the 1500m, needing to beat the regional qualifying standard of 4:27.80. The sophomore has also reached the national qualifying provisional standard in the 10,000m, running 34:29 to put herself in the running for a place in the NCAA Nationals.
Both seniors, Almeida and Wiseman are also entered into the 1500m in hopes of reaching the qualifying time of 3:47.80 in their final season. Wiseman is coming off a personal-best time of 14:41.85 in the 5000m in his race at Occidental College and is already the school record-holder in the 1500m, having run 3:54.17 earlier this year.
Two other runners will also be looking to qualify for regionals in the 5000m. Brian McDonald already owns the school record in the event, having run 14:39.44 this year. Freshman Megan Fairley will also compete for a place in the regionals in 5000m.
