2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Central

LOS ANGELES - A trio of LMU women's track athletes have earned their way into the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary which runs May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan. The official announcement came Thursday as the declared athletes lists were released by the NCAA.

Junior Danielle Shanahan and senior Kelli Capel each earn their third straight NCAA bid in the 5,000m run while senior Kayla de Bondt makes the field of 48 in the 1,500m for the second straight year.

Shanahan enters the postseason with the 10th seeded 5k time in the west at 15:58.79. That personal record, achieved at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 15, also ranks third all-time at LMU, trailing just a pair of All-Americans in Sheree Shea and Tara Erdmann.

Sugimoto is seeded 41st entering the postseason with her season-best 5k time of 16:24.93. de Bondt's 1,500m qualifying time of 4:21.88 is good for the 30th seed in the west region.

This marks the fourth consecutive year, and 10th overall in the 11 years of sponsoring women's track (and since the re-establishment of the men's program), that the Lions have advanced athletes into the postseason.

The top 12 from each event in each of the two preliminary regional competitions advance to the NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
