LOS ANGELES - For the second consecutive year, the Loyola Marymount University track team will be represented at the NCAA West Regional Championship. The Lions will once again send junior Laura Mickelson, who will look to place in the top-5 to qualify her for the NCAA National Championship.
This year, the regional meet is being hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, where the action begins at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25th. Mickelson's 5000m event goes off Friday night at 7:20 p.m.
A Look at the Competition - Mickelson will face the Western region's top competition, including representatives from the West Coast, Pac-10, Mountain West, Big West, Western Athletic, and Big Sky conferences.
The Race - Mickelson will be competing in the 5000m, which is scheduled to start at 7:20 p.m. She will be one of 20 runners looking to place in the top-5, to qualify for the NCAA Championships in June. Mickelson's past times currently rank her 13th in the West in the event.
Last Year at the NCAA Regional -When Mickelson took to the track at the NCAA Western Regionals in Provo, Utah last season, she had already made LMU history in several ways. It marked the first time the Lions had qualified for the NCAA track regionals, and in just the first officially-sanctioned track season at LMU.
But by the time the dust had cleared from her 5000m event, there was even more to add to the LMU record books. Mickelson's time of 17:16.59 was good for a fourth place finish and qualified her for the NCAA Championship.
