Lions ‘On Track’ in Classroom

May 22, 2018

The Lion Track & Field teams have performed admirably on the track this season. They can attribute a school record, NCAA qualifiers and countless career bests in their respective events to their successes. Yet, it is their performance in the classroom that gets less attention, but is more valuable when gaining perspective of their well-roundedness as both students and athletes.

Eleven Lion tracksters earned their way on to the Dean’s List in the spring semester with an unprecedented nine of 17 women receiving the honor. Even more impressive were seniors Danielle Shanahan, Jillian Dawley and Marisa Carino, junior Emily Hubert, and freshman Rosie Cruz all receiving a perfect 4.0 on the women’s side, while seniors Jack Polerecky and Patrick Gibson as well as freshman Kyle Friedler accomplished the same feat on the men’s side.

The women’s team semester GPA was an impressive 3.66 with 10 women earning a 3.5 GPA or higher. At the end of the year, the women’s team cumulative GPA is an astounding 3.53. Individually, Jillian Dawley graduated in four years with a perfect 4.0 in Biochemistry. Dawley plans to take the next year off and prepare for medical school.

Equally impressive, Marisa Carino also graduated in four years with a 3.97 GPA in Biology. Like Dawley, Carino is planning to take a small break from school then go to medical school. Finally, Grad student Danielle Shanahan graduated with a 3.96 GPA while earning a Masters in Education. Shanahan plans to take her running talent to the professional ranks. Freshman Gaby Guerrero has a cumulative 3.90 GPA in her first year at LMU.

The men’s team semester GPA was a shade lower than the women at a 3.39 with six of 16 men receiving a 3.5 GPA or higher. The men’s team cumulative GPA is an incredible 3.37. Individually, Grad student Patrick Gibson has a cumulative 3.96 GPA one year into a two-year Master of Arts in Counseling. Fellow Grad student Chris Fredlund graduated with a Masters in Education with a 3.87. Fredlund graduated from LMU in three years with a degree in Urban Studies and finished out his running career earning a Masters. Finally, Kyle Friedler has a cumulative 3.91 GPA in his first year at LMU.
