June 2, 2006
The following excerpt from Chris Jackson's Weekly College Notebook ran in the June 2 edition of the Daily Breeze.
Season awards: Once again, here are my picks for the top former South Bay athletes in their respective sports this spring. As always, this doesn't mean all of the athletes at the Division I, II and III levels aren't worthy. These are just the players who had the best seasons, and they can be debated.
Men's golf: Loyola Marymount freshman Brian Locke (St. Bernard) led the Lions to their first NCAA championships, which continues through the weekend at Sun River, Ore. Locke was the West Coast Conference Player of the Year and won the conference tournament individual crown as well.
Women's track and field: LMU sophomore distance runner Laura Mickelson (Mira Costa) qualified for the 5,000 meters at the NCAA championships beginning Wednesday. Mickelson and the Lions were fielding a track program for the first time.
