Mickelson Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Track Team

July 9, 2007

NEW ORLEANS - The honor roll continues for Loyola Marymount's Laura Mickelson, as the Lion runner was named to the 2007 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's All-Academic Track Team. Honored once again for her success both on the track and in the classroom, the accolade is added to an impressive resume for Mickelson, who will begin her senior campaign this fall.

This month's honor from the USTFCCCA comes in the same year that the organization named Mickelson an academic All-American in cross country as well.

In June, she became the eighth Lion in any sport to earn Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA, who named her to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Cross Country/Track team. Mickelson earned the second-team All-American status for her performances in the classroom, on the course, and on the track.

She advanced to the All-American pool after earning All-District first-team honors earlier this month. A fall NCAA National Cross Country Championship berth and spring NCAA West Track Regional appearance highlighted her athletic resume for the year.

Her athletic accomplishments come all while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.95 in a double major of natural science and pre-physical therapy. She is also working toward a minor in business administration.

The El Segundo, Calif. native was named LMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season in April. She is also a two-time West Coast Conference All-Academic selection.

Competing year-round with both the LMU cross country and track programs, Mickelson accumulated numerous athletic honors. In the fall, she was crowned the WCC Cross Country Champion, winning the 6k title by well over a minute. She advanced through NCAA Regionals, earning All-Region honors by the USTFCCCA, and placed in the nation's top-50 at the NCAA National Championships in the 6k.

In the spring, Mickelson advanced to NCAA Regionals for the second-straight season, finishing in the top-15 in the 5000m.

The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track season. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or above and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark.
