In her first race of the season, junior Danielle Shanahan took the individual championship at Saturday’s Mustang Challenge, leading the LMU women’s cross country team to a first-place team finish at Central Park in Santa Clarita, Calif. The Lion men, paced by sophomore Jack Polerecky’s ninth-place finish, took second as a team.

LMU men's and women's cross country opens the 2015 season Saturday in Brea, Calif., taking part in the 2015 Mark Covert Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. with the men's 8K, followed by the women's 5K at 9:15 a.m. at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Senior Kelli Sugimoto and juniors Danielle Shanahan and Kayla de Bondt were named to the 2015 All-WCC Preseason Women’s Cross Country Team, the league office announced Thursday. LMU’s women’s team was selected to finish third in the 10-team field while the men were the preseason fifth selection among nine teams.
