Women First, Men Second at Mark Covert Classic
The LMU women took three of the top four spots while the LMU men were led by freshmen Mat Holton.

BREA, Calif. - A one-two finish by Grace Graham-Zamudio and Danielle Shanahan led the LMU women's cross country team to a first-place finish Saturday morning at the Mark Covert Classic, while the LMU men's team took second in the team standings as both squads opened the 2014 season.
Graham-Zamudio was the 5k overall winner in a time of 17:59.9 followed closely by Shanahan in second in 18:06.4. Newcomer Kayla de Bondt placed fourth in 18:18.4 to give LMU three of the top four finishers. Chloe Curtis placed 11th in 18:41.0 and Kelli Sugimoto was 14th in 18:49.4 to round out the Lions' top five.
The LMU totaled 32 points to take the eight-team field, their fourth straight team title at the Mark Covert Classic. USC was second (51 pints), San Diego State was third (55 points) and host Cal State Fullerton was fourth (133 points).
For the men, it was freshman Mat Holton who took the lead for the Lions, placing fifth overall in 26:09.5 for the 8k course. Seven Lions finished between seventh and 17th place including senior Daniel Gibson in seventh (26:15.8), freshman Christopher Fredlund in eighth (26:20.9) and freshman Jack Polerecky in ninth (26:21.0).
As a team, the Lions placed second with 41 points, runner up to team champion Long Beach State which scored 36 points. Cal State Fullerton (66 points), San Diego (89 points) and Pepperdine (132 points) rounded out the field.
