Lions Sweep the Field at Mark Covert Classic

BREA, Calif. - The LMU men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2013 season on a high note, sweeping the field at the 2013 Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton Saturday at Carbon Canyon Park.
On the men's side, Weston Strum (24:46.7) and Drew Dalton (25:18.8) finished one-two among all competing NCAA Division I runners in the 8K race. Kevin Joerger was fifth (25:55.3), John Pickhaver was sixth (25:56.1) and Michael Vorgitch was eighth (26:13.4) to round out the Lions placing in the top 10.
In the team field of five DI programs, LMU took first with 22 points, followed by the host Titans in second (42 pts), Long BEach State in third (82 pts), San Diego in fourth (110 pts) and Pepperdine in fifth (128 pts).
For the women, LMU newcomer Grace Graham-Zamudio was the top overall and DI finisher in the 5K with a time of 17:45.5. Freshman Danielle Shanahan was close behind in second (17:53.0) while Kelli Sugimoto (18:40.5) was eighth to round out the Lions in the top 10.
Those places, along with four more top 20 finishers led the Lions to take first in the team standings with 34 points. Pepperdine was second (66 pts), followed by USC in third (73 pts), Cal State Fullerton in fourth (95 pts), San Diego State in fifth (113 pts), LBSU in sixth (144 pts), USD in seventh (211 pts) and Cal State Bakersfield in eighth (237 pts).
The Lion squads take a week off from competition before heading up the coast to Malibu on Sept. 14 for the WCC Preview Meet hosted by Pepperdine.
