BREA, Calif. -
The men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season at the Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, California with strong second (2nd) place finishes.
The men traversed an 8,000 meter course led by senior Jack Polerecky who ran 25:40 finishing fifth (5th) overall. Close behind Polerecky, redshirt senior Patrick Gibson finished 11th with a time of 25:51 while junior Branden Estrada was third for the Lion men placing 15th (26:13). Rounding out the scoring five, junior Jordan McLennan and senior Harry Loasby were 24th and 25th respectively just one second apart. The men scored 70 points for their 2nd place finish.
All-American senior Danielle Shanahan was the women's overall winner, running an impressive 17:56, nearly 15 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Shanahan defended her championship from last year where she cruised to victory as a redshirt. The second Lion to cross the finish line was freshman Alex Beitia who opened her collegiate career with a fourth (4th)-place finish overall. Beitia ran 18:30 in her debut. Junior Maddi Vorgitch had a strong race finishing with a time of 18:37 and finishing eighth (8th) overall. Sophomore Hannah Wohlenberg and junior Elena Garcia rounded out five in the top-20, finishing 13th and 19th. The Lions were just two points out of first place scoring 36 points.
The Lions will next compete at the UC Riverside Invitational on September 16th.
