Adam Bacon Tops Collegiate Finishers at Bronco Invitational
LMU men and women's squads take second at season-opener.
Sept. 4, 2004
Belmont, Calif. Loyola Marymount's Adam Bacon led all collegiate runners at Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational Saturday. Bacon's time of 27:20.78 for the 8k led the Lions to a second place finish. Maria Degitz crossed the line fifth among the women's field, as the women's squad equaled the men's second spot finish.
Drew Haberkorn and Bernie Ochoa joined Bacon in the race's top ten, clocking times of 27:53.06 (fourth) and 28:32.06 (ninth).
All eight Lion finishers crossed the line within less than three minutes of each other, something the squad has come to be known for since the 2003 West Coast Conference Championship when the top three Lions crossed the line within three seconds. The five Lions that rounded out the squad- David Steinhafel, Lino Almeida, Jonathan MacNeil, Reynaldo Barrera, and Andrew Thompson - finished together within a 42-second span.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Mickelson finished just behind Degitz in sixth overall with a time of 19:57.90. Fellow freshman Brittany Rezowalli and sophomore Kristen Gonzalez joined Degitz and Laura Mickelson in the top ten with times of
20:07.40 and 20:07.93. Trinity Amalfitano, Sara Mickelson, Heather Rosas, and Catherine Lima rounded up the women's squad for the second place finish.
The season-opening race previews the 2004 WCC Championship meet, as it is held on the same Crystal Springs course in Belmont, Calif. Host Santa Clara took first in both the men and women's fields.
The Lions return to action next Saturday at the USD Invitational.
