IRVINE, Calif. - Laura Mickelson won the women's individual title and the women's and men's squads placed second and third respectively in an impressive all-around outing by Loyola Marymount cross country at the Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday.
The women's races started the event, and Mickelson won the 5k title in 17:27.70, nearly a half-minute ahead of the second place finisher.
LMU's Tara Erdmann finished fifth overall in 18:03.10 in her collegiate debut.
The women's team finished second only to the host Anteaters, finishing second of 12 teams, including Cal Poly, Fresno State, Pepperdine, UNLV, and Cal State Northridge.
"The women started things off for us and set the bar," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "Laura picked up right where she left off last year and just ran away from some very talented athletes. Obviously, Tara is an enormous talent and had an exceptional debut. We've definitely shown our hand now, so I'm sure we'll have some people taking note of us. Once again, our upperclassmen rose to the occasion, but with two freshmen in our top-5 and three in our top-7, there is no doubt in my mind that we will only improve as we go along."
The men's team placed third of 20 teams in the 8k, finishing ahead of squads like UC Irvine, Fresno State, and Pepperdine.
Trevor Wiseman led the Lion men for the second straight week, finishing in the top-15 in 25:04.90.
Brian McDonald was second for the Lions in 25:19.90 to place in the top-20.
There was less than a minute between Wiseman and the Lions' sixth-man Jonathan MacNeil, who crossed the line in 26:00.70.
"On the men's side, this is by far the best we have ever looked," Guerrero said. "Once again, our depth proved key to our success. Trevor and Brian both had great races up front, but it was the fact that we had six guys cross the line in under a minute that really made the difference. We beat some very good teams today, including some that we have never beaten in the 10 years that I have been here at LMU."
The Lions return to action next Saturday at the SDSU Aztec Invitational.
