LMU Men Finish Fourth in Aztec Invitational

Sept. 15, 2003

San Diego, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount cross country teams competed in the Aztec Invitational this weekend in San Diego. The men finished fourth, while the women placed eighth in the open team brackets. Sophomore Kenny Arehart led all Lions, crossing the line 15th with a 8k mark of 28:02.

Each of LMU's scoring five men finished in the top 25, crossing the line as a team before any other squad. This beats the program record set by the LMU men last week for the time gap between the scoring five and was the team's best time at Balboa Park. Following Arehart, junior Bernie Ochoa and sophomore David Steinhafel placed 18th and 19th, with times of 28:12 and 28:13. Adam Bacon finished in 28:29 good for 21st, and Andrew Thompson rounded out the Lions' scoring five with a time of 28:35. Reynaldo Barrera (29:19), Drew Haberkorn (29:21), Greg Corry (30:02), Connor Stinson (31:32), and Dan Judnick (31:35) also competed for LMU.

The women finished eighth in the 5k open team competition and were led by co-captain Maria Degitz, who finished 20th in 20:20. The next three Lions to cross the finish line were freshmen, led by Kristen Gonzalez, who finished 26th with a time of 20:34. Melani Hom finished in 20:49 and Katie Strachan clocked 21:04. Rounding out the women's scoring five was Michelle Toapanta with her time of 22:42. Co-captain Trinity Amalfitano (23:20) and Allison Bernardi (24:07) also competed for the Lions.

The Lions return to action next Saturday, when they run in the UC Riverside Invitational. Ochoa led all Lions in last year's UCR Invitational, finishing the 8k in 27:34.3.
