Cross Country Concludes WCC Preview Meet

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Following a strong opening week at the Mark Covert Classic, the LMU men’s and women’s cross country teams followed with an impressive outing at the WCC Preview Meet, hosted by the University of San Diego, Saturday morning at Tecolote Shores North Park.

The women’s team, who took home the team title the their previous appearance at the WCC Preview Meet in 2014, finished third overall, while the men's squad grabbed second in the team standings.

Kyla Danforth and Kayla de Bondt cracked the top 10 in the women’s 5K, while Koby Pederson and Jack Pokerecky also placed within the top 10 in the men's 8K.

Danforth took the sixth spot for the second consecutive week with a time of 22:34 and Bondt claimed 10th in her first action of the season. Maddi Vorgitch came in at 23:00 for the No. 12 spot, while Hannah Wohlenberg crossed the finish line at 23:16 to take 16th and Elena Garcia followed two seconds later to round out LMU’s scorers.

Cal State Fullerton placed four within the top 10 to take home the team title with a score of 28. Host San Diego followed with 41 points and LMU came in third with 61 points.

On the men’s side, Koby Pederson finished third overall for the second straight week, clocking in at 25:42. Jack Polerecky took eighth at 25:55 and Brian Joerger took the No. 11 spot with a time of 25:59. Mat Holton ticked in at 26:0, good for 13th overall, while Christopher Fredlund finished 16th to round out the LMU point-earners.

Cal State Fullerton made it a sweep as it took home the team title with 40 points, besting LMU by seven points, and Pepperdine rounded out the podium with 70 points.

On deck for the Lions is the Regional Preview Saturday, Oct. 1 in Sacramento, Calif.
