Shanahan Leads Lion Women to Team Title

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - In her first race of the season, junior Danielle Shanahan took the individual championship at Saturday's Mustang Challenge, leading the LMU women's cross country team to a first-place team finish at Central Park in Santa Clarita, Calif. The Lion men, paced by sophomore Jack Polerecky's ninth-place finish, took second as a team.

Shanahan was one of three Lion women to place in the top 10, leaving the pack with a winning time of 17:23.18 on the 5k course. Senior Kelli Capel placed third overall in 17:29.58 and junior Kayla de Bondt was sixth in 17:54.28. All of LMU's scoring seven finished in the top 21 as Lorena Garcia took 13th (18:14.17), Maddi Vorgitch was 15th (18:16.44, Emily Hubert was 16th (18:18.25) and Samantha Garcia was 21st (18:25.32).

 

 

LMU women totaled 36 points in the team scoring for their first team title at the Mustang Challenge. UCLA took second (94 points), followed by Biola (119 points) in third and the host The Masters College (125 points) in fourth.

For the men, Polerecky placed ninth overall, and eighth among scoring runners, running a 25:28.66 8k. Freshman Koby Pederson was the Lions' next top finisher, placing 13th overall in 25:40.46. Senior Lance Capel was 16th in 25:50.19 and sophomore Christopher Fredlund was 18th in 25:57.04.

The three final scoring Lions finished in succession. Freshman Branden Estrada was 22nd (26:04.47), sophomore Harry Loasby was 23rd (26:04.50) and junior Grant Lapovich was 24th (26:04.53).

With three top-10 finishers and 38 total points, UCLA's men took the team title. The Lion men totaled 69 points for second place followed by Cal State San Marcos in third (70 points) and Cal State Fullerton in fourth (136 points).

Next up for the Lions is the Hornet Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State on Saturday, Oct. 3.
