Palo Alto, Calif. Loyola Marymount cross country put up some impressive results against the nation's top competition Saturday afternoon at the 33rd annual Stanford Invitational. The LMU men's 4k team finished second only to the host Cardinal, while junior Laura Mickelson took third in the women's 6k.
In addition to LMU's two top-3 finishes, the women's 4k team took sixth place of 10 teams, the women's 6k finished seventh of 17, and the men's 8k finished 11th of 19 teams.
Five freshmen and a junior ran the Lions to a second place finish in the 4k men's race. Cameron Pagett (13:12), Jordan Legan (13:26), and Kacy Sommers (13:29) made up the top-3 for the Lions, who finished second of seven teams.
"I've said all season that this men's team is our deepest ever," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "Today proved that to be true once again. We entered five freshmen and just one upperclassman in the 4k and finished second only to fourth-ranked Stanford."
Mickelson finished third in the women's 6k among a sea of Cardinal, as top-ranked Stanford placed six runners in the top-10, including three in the top-5. Her time of 20:22, along with Kristen Gonzalez's 21:56 and Brittany Rezowalli's 22:22, helped the Lions to a seventh place finish.
The seven Lions in the men's 8k all posted career-bests, leading to a new LMU 8k record of 128:31 (25:43 average). Junior Jonathan MacNeil led the Lions for the first time in his career, posting a time of 25:07. Nicholas Brennan (25:13) and Trevor Wiseman (25:49) rounded out the top-3 for the Lions.
Sophomore Caitlin Jennings led the Lions in the women's 4k with a time of 15:58. Kelly Yahr (16:12) and Ahnie Draper (16:35) also helped the Lions to their sixth place finish.
The Lions will take a break in collegiate competition next weekend to run with their alumni in the annual Manhattan Beach Alumni Run Saturday.
