SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The LMU men’s and women’s cross country teams opened its first of four races in October at the Capital Cross Challenge Saturday morning at Haggins Oaks Golf Complex.

The women's squad, who won the inaugural Capital Cross Challenge a year ago, followed with a fourth-place showing in the team standings, while the men finished fifth overall.

On the women's side, Arizona State topped the podium with 72 points after posting four finishers within the top 15. Southern edged out Cal Baptist by two points with 139 and LMU just missed the podium with 147 total points.

Kayla de Bondt tallied her best finish of the season, taking fourth with a time of 20:50.3. Maddi Vorgitch and Kyla Danforth cracked the top 25 as Vorgitch took 19th at 21:18.1 and Danforth finished 24th at 21:24.0. Marisa Carino ticked in at 21:48.5 to claim 49th and Emily Hubert finished 60th with a time of 21:59.0 to round out LMU's top 5 finishers. 

Chicago State dominated the men's race, finishing with 29 points and placed all five point-scorers within the top 10. Arizona State turned in another strong performance with 84 points, while California finished third overall with 115 points. Cal Baptist finished with 129 and LMU followed with 179 total points.

For the third straight race, Koby Pederson posted the top spot for the Lions on the men's side, clocking in at 24:30.7 to finish 20th. Jack Polerecky and Brandon Veientos followed shortly after as Polercky came in at 24:34.9 to place 24th and Vientos stopped the clock at 24:43.5 to earn 33rd. Jordan McLennan and Mat Holton placed 55th and 61st with times of 25:00.8 and 25:06.5, respectively

LMU will have a weekend off from competition before racing for three straight weekends, starting with the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara on Oct. 15.
