Manhattan Beach, Calif. - Loyola Marymount cross country participated in Saturday's Manhattan Beach 10k with program alumni, enjoying the annual "Alumni Run" with both the LMU cross country and the local Manhattan Beach community.
Having a bye week in the schedule, the Lions found competition from another source: their own alumni. Alumni of the LMU cross country program joined the current squad in running the annual Manhattan Beach 10k. With the current squad participating as just a weekend workout, Head Coach Scott Guerrero and Assistant Coach Warren Sutton led the Lions to the finish line as two of the race's top finishers.
Guerrero, who sits on the organizing committee for the local run, has made the community event an annual alumni reunion, and this year was no different. Past and present Lions took to the streets of Manhattan Beach this for the road race, with Iggy the Lion being among the LMU finishers.
"In 2002, we had enough local alumni (mostly recent grads) to get everyone together on what is technically a bye week for the team," Guerrero explained. "We put together an alumni team to run the 10K, printed up some jerseys, and billed it as the `1st Annual Alumni Run.' A tradition was born."
Coach Guerrero and the Lions keep in touch with program alumni and fans throughout the season through their online group. Guerrero welcomes new additions to the group, which you can check out by clicking here.
