LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The LMU women's cross country team picked up its second victory of the season with a win at the 20th annual UC San Diego Invitational. The Lions recorded a 3-10-11-15-32 finish for their first win since the season opening Mark Covert Classic in September. LMU's men finished second in the race, led by junior Kevin Joerger's third-place performance.

Sarah Vitug, who finished third in the 6k race, led LMU's women with a time of 22:20. Freshman Melanie Joerger finished 10th overall, a crossed the finish line at 22:49.6. Senior Jessica Mumaugh was next in the race, finishing 11th overall, in 22:57.6. Freshman Evelyn Gonzalez ran a time of 23:02.8 for 15th place. Junior Michelle Hickerson rounded out the Lions' scoring five with a 34th place finish and a time of 23:45.6.

Freshmen Kelly Parsons and Samantha Garcia completed their first collegiate 6k races with respective times of 24:19.3 and 24:56 for 65th and 102nd.

The Lions finished with 71 points, 24 better than second-place San Diego State. LMU beat a field of 22 teams from throughout the west.


 

 

Kevin Joerger ran a 26:20.9 in his first race of the season, for third place in the men's 8k race. Senior Greg Innes placed 23rd at the meet, with a time of 27:16.6, his best 8k time this year. Junior Mike Evans was a second behind Innes at 27:17.8 for 25th overall. Sophomore Douglas Petree was 37th overall, after recording a time of 27:32.1. Fellow sophomore Andres Lopez ran the course in 27:39.9 for 41st in the race.

Freshman Sam Worley finished the 8k in 66th place, crossing the finish line at 28:10.2. Ryan Vargas, also a freshman, crossed at 28:13.2 for 68th.

The Lions finished second in the 14-team race behind the host UC San Diego Tritons.

Next up for LMU is a trip to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Chile Pepper Invitational. The race will begin at 9:45 a.m., next Saturday, Oct. 13.
