Lion's Take on the Vanguard Invitational
Women take 4th and men take 6th at the Vanguard Invitational this morning

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
This morning the LMU Cross Country team ran a partial squad at the Vanguard Invitational in Coast Mesa, CA. The women's team took fourth behind top ranked NAIA teams while the men came in 6th overall. The women were led by sophomore Jessica Mumaugh, while the men were led by freshmen Mike Evans.
The women ran a strong B team who came in 4th overall only behind Azusa Pacific, Point Loma and Westmont, all of which are ranked in the top 25 of the NAIA. Sophomore Jessica Mumaugh led the Lions with a 13th place finish in 18:42. Mumaugh has now broke 19 minutes in both 5k races this season improving on her freshman year performances. Freshman Kelly Shogren and sophomore Megan Fairley came in next for the Lions in 19:02 and 19:03 respectively. Shogren placed 20th overall while Fairley just missed top 20 placing 21st. Sophomore Caroline Draper was close in tow placing 25th in 19:07 for the course. Rounding out the Lion's top five, Jillian Jaccard came in 35th overall in 19:36 to give the Lions a total of 114 points and put them in fourth place. Also for the Lions, freshman Laura Delgado placed 37th overall in 19:41 while senior Shea Franklin came in 59th in 20:35. The lady Lions had an average team time of 19:05 and had a deep squad competing against some of the top NAIA division schools.
For the men, Freshman Mike Evans out of Montana led the Lions coming in 28th overall in 27:17 for the 8k course. Senior Michael Herrera turned in a solid performance running 27:38 coming in 41st overall. Sophomore Greg Innes came in close behind Herrera in 27:44 placing 45th. Next across the line for the Lions was junior Oran Arms running 28:14 while RJ Larrieu ran 29:08. Also for the Lions, Michael Carlone and Matthew Duncan competed well on the 8k course. LMU placed 6th as a team beating out conference rivals Pepperdine University and southern California rivals the Men of Troy Club. The men also were up against some of the top NAIA schools coming in behind Vanguard University, Azusa Pacific and Westmont.
Next up the Lions will race their top seven at NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute Indiana this coming weekend October 16th, 2010.
