Lions set the stage for upcoming WCC Championship.
Oct. 13, 2007
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Junior Laura Mickelson won the women's 5k title and the Loyola Marymount men finished second of 17 teams, as the Lions posted an impressing outing on the course at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif. Eight of the 10 runners who scored points for the Lions Saturday (both men and women) set new personal bests for the 5k and 8k distances at the Baylands Park course. The meet previewed what looks to be an exciting October 27 West Coast Conference Championship.
Mickelson's time of 17:03 equaled the course record, as she cruised to her third individual title of the season. She finished 18 seconds in front of the second place finisher, Sarah Apgar of Long Beach State.
Freshman Tara Erdmann also posted a top-5 finish with her time of 17:38. That time equaled the ninth-best mark of all time for the course, and also equaled the best-ever time posted by a freshman.
"There were definitely bright spots on the women's side today," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said, "especially the performances by Laura and Tara."
Brittany Rezowalli (18:27), Annie Holden (18:28), and Abby Fall (18:34) rounded out the scoring five for the Lions, who finished in eighth place in the tough field. LMU finished ahead of regionally-ranked Boise State, who placed ninth.
The men finished second of 17 teams, topping WCC foes Santa Clara (seventh), San Francisco (ninth), and Saint Mary's (16th). San Francisco had started the season in the regional rankings. All five of the Lions' scoring runners placed in the top-35.
"The men ran an aggressive, but smart race," Guerrero said. "It's a crowded field, and you have to get up at the front of the pack early and we did that today."
The Lions who are scheduled to run at the WCC Championship will take next weekend off from competition, while others compete at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Invitational.
