San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Junior Laura Mickelson won her third individual title of the season Saturday, as the Lions ran at the Cal Poly Invitational at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course. It was LMU cross country's final tune-up before the October 28 West Coast Conference Championships.
Mickelson finished first of 141 runners in the 5k, crossing the line in 17:34.3. The victory was her third individual title of 2006, as she also took first at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational and the SDSU Aztec Invitational.
"Laura was once again impressive," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "The only two women to place ahead of her in any race this season were two Stanford All-Americans at the Stanford Invitational."
Behind Mickelson's performance, the LMU women finished third of 12 teams, topping WCC foes Pepperdine, who finished fifth, and San Diego, who placed 10th.
Senior Kristen Gonzalez (18:47.8) and junior Claudia Bishop (18:55.2) followed Mickelson. For Bishop, it was her first performance under the 19-minute mark. Freshman Annie Holden also turned in her best 5k time of the season in 19:37.6.
The men's squad was also led by a junior, as Nick Brennan finished the 8k seventh overall in 26:33.7. That performance led the men to finish fourth of seven teams, ahead of both WCC opponents Pepperdine (fifth) and San Diego (sixth).
"Nick really ran well today," Guerrero said. "He was aggressive from the start and looked strong the whole way through."
Brennan was followed by Sean Sisk (27:33.0) and Drew Haberkorn (27:40.6).
The Lions then had two freshmen round out their top-5 in Cameron Pagett (27:51.4) and Paul Beckwith (27:54.5). "Cameron and Paul moved up all the way through the race and looked strong," Guerrero said.
LMU will use the next two weeks to prepare for the WCC Championships.
