Women Take Team Title, Men Finish Runner-Up

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Behind three top-10 individual finishers, the LMU women's cross country team clinched the team title Saturday morning at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara at Baylands Regional park in Sunnyvale, Calif. With one in the top-10 and three in the top-25, the Lion men took second place in the team standings.

Danielle Shanahan led the Lion women, placing fifth overall and fourth in the field of scoring runners, finishing the 6K course in 20:05.1. Kelli Capel placed seventh in 20:28.0 and Kayla de Bondt was ninth in 20:43.8. Freshman Emily Hubert was the fourth Lion to cross the finish line (21:10.0) while Lorena Garcia rounded out the scoring Lions, placing 20th in 21:10.6.

 

 

LMU totaled 58 team points to easy beat runner-up San Jose State with 133 points. LMU's fellow West Coast Conference teams placed fifth (San Diego), 10th (Santa Clara), 12th (Saint Mary's) and 15th (Pacific) in the field of 18 squads.

For the men, freshman Koby Pederson led the way with an eighth-place, 24:09.1 finish on the 8K course. The four remaining scoring Lions placed 18th through 31st to give LMU 108 team points and the runner-up finish. Their team total edged out Cal (114 points) and Saint Mary's (115 points).

Junior Brandon Vientos placed 18th in 24:30.3, senior Lance Capel was 24th in 24:37.5, sophomore Christopher Fredlund was 29th in 24:42.0 and freshman Branden Estrada was 31st in 24:43.9.

LMU's "B" squad will race for the final time this season on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Titan Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Lions' top runners will break for the week before heading up to Spokane, Wash., on Saturday, Oct. 31 for the 2015 WCC Championships, hosted by Gonzaga.
