Petree, Gonzalez Set PRs in Final Race Before WCC Championships

Freshman Evelyn Gonzalez set a new PR while finishing 7th overall at the Titan Invitational.

FULLERTON, Calif. -- This Friday evening LMU Cross Country participated in its final race before the West Coast Conference Championships. Sophomore Douglas Petree and freshman Evelyn Gonzalez led the Lions at the Titan Invitational, both setting personal records in the process. LMU sent four men and four women in the team's traveling squad for a final tune-up before next week's conference meet.

Petree led the Lions' men in the 8k race with a time of 25:32.8 which was 24th overall in the race. Junior Mike Evans finished 43rd in the race, recording a time of 26:07.8. Sophomore Andres Lopez ran a 26:23.7 for 53rd overall. Senior Greg Innes crossed the line at 27:19 for 69th.

Freshman Evelyn Gonzalez set a new PR, recording a time of 18:12 in the 5k race which placed her 7th in the race. Senior Jessica Mumaugh ran an 18:21.7 for 11th overall. Freshman Melanie Joerger finished 22nd overall with a time of 18:35. Junior Michelle Hickerson ran the course in 18:40.7 for 27th.

In the team competition Mesa (Arizona) won the men's race, while San Diego State won the men's race.

Several Lions ran unattached and ran recorded personal best times at the meet: Michael Carlone (25:38.6), Dan Smith (26:39.9), Ryan Vargas (25:56.2), Derek Weber (27:04), Sam Worley (26:13.5) in the 8k men's race, and Samantha Garcia (18:37.1), Kelly Parsons (18:58.2), and Alexandra Young (19:44.4) in the 6k women's race.  Senior Laura Delgado (19:24.2) recorded a season-best in the 6k, running unattached.

Overall eight of the nine men's performances were season bests, with seven of the nine results being career bests.  For the women, seven of the eight performances were season bests, with four of the eight being career bests.

Next up for the Lions are the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27. The championship meet will take place in Portland, Ore. Check for information and details as the Lions pursue two conference champions.
