LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- LMU senior Sheree Shea gave a great effort representing the Lions at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Saturday. After near misses at previous regional finals in cross country and track, she accomplished her goal of running in a national championship, finishing with a time of 21:23.2 which placed her 181st overall in a crowded, competitive field of 253 of the country’s best runners.
Shea finished the first 2,000 meters in 6:45, within 20 seconds of the lead pack of runners. At the 3,022-meter mark, her time was 10:28. She finished at 21:23.2, with a 1k pace of 3:34, and a mile pace of 5:45.
Competing in her first national championship was one of Shea’s goals this season. After a great performance at the West Regionals last week, she made it to the big stage with 252 of the best collegiate runners. With another season of eligibility in cross country and two more seasons of track, the San Diego native will have plenty of opportunities to pursue All-American honors and national titles.
Betsy Saina from Iowa State University won the women’s championship. The University of Oregon won the women’s team competition.
With the fall schedule complete for cross-country, the Lions wait for spring for the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
