LMU Adds Track to Athletic Program
Director of Athletics Dr. William Husak announces the sanctioning of LMU's 19th and 20th sports in men's and women's track.

Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount University will now compete in men's and women's track at the varsity intercollegiate level, Director of Athletics Dr. William Husak announced today. The addition of LMU's 19th and 20th sports is effective immediately and the two teams will begin competition as officially-sanctioned sports this weekend.
"The addition of track is about solidifying the excellence of our cross country programs," Husak said. "Making this move now is a logical and cost efficient way to keep LMU on an even playing field among our cross country opponents in the competitive West Coast Conference."
LMU has participated in an unofficial spring track season for three years now, but the authorized sanctioning of the sport will allow LMU and eighth-year Cross Country/Track Head Coach Scott Guerrero to attract student-athletes who are interested in competing in both sports. The addition of track means that LMU runners can qualify for NCAA regional and national competition during both the fall and spring seasons. Guerrero said the program will maintain a distance and middle distance focus.
"I couldn't be happier," Guerrero said. "This will enhance the quality of our distance program. We had our best-ever cross country season this fall and this is simply the next logical step. For the last few years, our distance runners have been limited in the spring because of the lack of an official sanction. That barrier has now been removed, and we will now be able to create additional competitive opportunities for our distance athletes."
Lion fans will find the new track rosters will be largely comprised of LMU cross country runners, with a few who specialize in track events. The track season will feature a minimum of six competition dates held between February and May.
Competition begins this weekend for LMU's newest sports, with the Lions running in the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet Saturday.
