Student-Athletes Take Home Academic Honors

Los Angeles, CA (Apr. 15) - Loyola Marymount student-athletes claimed 16 honors at the annual Academic Awards Convocation held at Sacred Heart Chapel on Thursday. LMU President Robert B. Lawton, S.J., presided over the annual year-end convocation. Senior cross country runner Dan Judnick was one of three students named by the president as Scholar of the Year.

Judnick, an engineering major who will graduate with a 3.9 GPA, took home six different honors on Thursday. He was also one of three honored as part of the University Honors Program and was given a Presidential Citation. The three honors are the highest given to graduating seniors by the president.

Joining Judnick as a Presidential Citation recipient was fellow cross country senior Bernie Ochoa and swimmer Miranda Mooers.

Also awarded during the convocation where the individual winners from each area of study at LMU. Each College at LMU awards an overall Scholar of the Year while also recognizing the scholar of the year from each specific area of study. Judnick added to his list of honors as he was named the College of Science and Engineering Outstanding Scholar. He was also given the honor in Mechanical Engineering and Mooers earned the honor in Biology.

In the Bellarmine College of the Liberal Arts senior rower Caitlin McClain was named the Scholar of the Year in Urban Studies.

The convocation also recognized members of the various honor societies at LMU. Ochoa, McClain and Mooers were each honored as members of the Alpha Sigma Nu, the Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. It was formed in accordance with the ideals of Jesuit higher education to honor students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, service and loyalty.

Mooers and Sylvia Olvera of the crew team were honored as members of Beta Beta Beta, the Biology Society. McClain and Jennifer Henry of the women's basketball team were honored as members of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. Judnick was honored for his involvement in Sigma Xi (International Scientific Society) and Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Society). Also honored for her involvement in Sigma Xi was Mooers.

Rounding out the honors was Ochoa as a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national Physics Honor Society and fellow cross country runner Andrew Thompson as a member of the Theta Alpha Kappa Theology Society.
