Almeida Signs NLI To Run With LMU

May 6, 2004

Los Angeles, Calif. - California distance running standout Lino Almeida has signed a National Letter of Intent to run with Loyola Marymount cross country, Head Coach Scott Guerrero announced today. Almeida will join the Lions in the fall of 2004.

"One of our goals over the past year has been to add at least one 'program changing' type of athlete," Guerrero said. "I think Lino fits that bill. We're coming off our best season in the past several years, but our goal is always to get to the next level. I believe that Lino is the right guy to help us to do that."

Almeida currently ranks among the top thirty prep 1600 meter runners in California, with a personal best of 4:17.66 achieved at the Arcadia Invitational in April. He will look to better that mark and move into CIF Championship level competition during May.

During the fall 2003 cross country season, Almeida was an individual qualifier for the Southern Section Division I Championship finals, running a personal best time of 15:36 on the grueling Mt. SAC course.

Family, coaches, and school staff sat in on the signing held at Almeida's Arcadia High School.

Almeida will join a men's squad that placed fourth in the 2003 West Coast Conference Championships, the highest program finish in 12 seasons.

"I obviously couldn't be happier to have Lino joining us in the fall," said Guerrero. "He's a good student, captain of his team, and a leader both on and off the field. He's very well respected by all who know him and really embodies the type of quality athlete that we want on our team."
