Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 5) - Loyola Marymount University women's soccer player Jessica Hanson and men's cross country runner Adam Bacon were killed in a car accident on Friday afternoon. The LMU student-athletes were on their way to Lake Havasu on vacation with the Hanson family when the incident occurred.
The accident took place on Interstate 40 near the Essex Road exit outside of Needles between 11 a.m. and noon. Two others were killed in the accident. Three additional passengers were taken to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.
Hanson (Pasadena, Calif.) and Bacon (Middletown, RI) were entering their senior seasons at LMU. Hanson graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada, Calif., and Bacon from Coronado High School in Coronado, Calif.
"This is obviously a tragic time for Jessica and Adam's families, as well as the Loyola Marymount community," said LMU Director of Athletics Bill Husak. "Our prayers go out to the families of Jessica and Adam. Both typified the best of LMU student-athletes and this world was greatly impacted by them."
Hanson and Bacon, both of whom excelled on their respective teams, were to begin their final seasons this week. Women's soccer was to report for the first day of practice on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Bacon's season was to begin with the team's annual training in Mammoth on Sunday, Aug. 21.
