SAN BRUNO, Calif. - In the largest field in West Coast Conference history, the LMU women's cross country team is the preseason pick to finish fourth while the Lion men are picked fifth, in a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. In addition, seniors Sheree Shea and Weston Strum were named to their respective Preseason All-WCC Teams.
The Lion women placed fifth in the nine-team field last fall, led by Shea who placed third overall on the 6k course at Fern Hill Park in Portland, Ore. Three of LMU's seven competitors from last year's WCC Championship return while Head Coach Scott Guerrero has also filled out the roster with a mix of freshman and junior transfers.
San Francisco received eight first place votes and 80 total points to sit atop the preseason poll. BYU earned one first place vote and 70 total points for second place. Portland also received one first place vote and 68 points for a third place selection. In fourth place, LMU received 54 points.
On the men's side, the Lions were voted right where they finished at last year's Championship. Five of the seven 2012 Championship competitors return in 2013, led by Strum who placed seventh overall one year ago.
BYU (61 points) edged Portland (60 points) in the overall voting by one point and one first place vote. Gonzaga earned 48 points for third place, San Francisco earned 44 points for fourth place and LMU followed in fifth with 36 points.
Both the LMU men's and women's cross country teams open the 2013 slate at the Mark Covert Classic in Brea, Calif., on Aug. 31.
