Experience and youth combine for an exciting season ahead for LMU men's and women's cross country.

LOS ANGELES - The LMU men's and women's cross country season gets underway this week with both squads competing in the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif. The men's 8K is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women's 5K at 9:15 a.m.
"This will be the only time we run everybody," said 17th-year Head Coach Scott Guerrero. "We want to win, but at the same time it's an early season race, kind of a rust buster. For where we are in the season and what we're trying to figure out in terms of our pieces, it's the perfect opportunity to do that."
For Guerrero, his men's and women's squads offer a very contrasting look. In 2013, the LMU men finished third at the West Coast Conference Championship - one of the best finishes in program history. Four of the seven competitors from that race are now gone to graduation, making way for new faces, including seven true freshmen, to earn a spot in that top pack.
On the women's side, three of the top four runners from last fall return, led by 2013 WCC Freshman of the Year Danielle Shanahan and senior first team All-WCC honoree Grace Graham-Zamudio. The Lion women placed fourth in 2013 and will look to their core returning group to lead the charge this year.
