Cross Country takes on UC Irvine Invitational

Sept. 4, 2008

Los Angeles, CA -

With the high level of competition, LMU cross country looks to stand out in the large field at the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational.

In the largest field LMU has seen at the invitational, they will be running on a new course for both men and women at UCI's Anteater Recreation Center Fields.

"I think we have the opportunity to do really well there this year." Coach Scott Guerrero said. Last year the men's team finished third at the invitational. Overall the men finished right behind Cal Poly and Southern Utah. Only Cal Poly returns this year. Senior Trevor Wiseman was the top finisher for the Lions last year with a time of 25:04.9. Key veterans returning for the meet this year include junior Brian McDonald, senior Lino Almeida and sophomore Connor Pastoor.

The women finished second last year, a little over 16 seconds behind host UC Irvine. The top returning finisher for the Lions is All-WCC selection and 2007 Freshmen of the Year, Tara Erdmann. At last year's race she finished in fifth place at 18:03.1. Key returners for the Lions are Brooke Lademan, Annie Holden, and Abby Fall. LMU also looks to its future with the new freshmen class.

Already making an impact from last week's Malibu Oceanside Open, freshmen newcomers Brieanna Delaney, Stephanie Felix, Thomas Finnigan and Phillip Benavides all finished in the top five for the Lions vs. Pepperdine. Coach Guerrero thinks their future is bright. "This will give our freshmen their first real test in a big crowded race with lots of quality competition." Guerrero said.

Because of the large number of participants, there will be two races each on the men's and women's side. Race time begins at 8 a.m. The Lion women run in the second 5,000-meter race at 8:30. LMU men follow right behind with the 8,000-meter A race at 9:00a.m.
