LOS ANGELES - LMU men's and women's cross country opens the 2015 season Saturday in Brea, Calif., taking part in the 2015 Mark Covert Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. with the men's 8K, followed by the women's 5K at 9:15 a.m. at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
The Lion women enter the meet as four-time reigning team champions, while also boasting the last three individual winners. The 2015 women's squad has experience on its side, leading to high expectations for Saturday, and the season as a whole.
Senior Kelli Capel and juniors Danielle Shanahan and Kayla de Bondt were all named to the 2015 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team, announced last week. The trio are expected to lead the Lion pack this fall while also getting ample help from fellow upperclassmen Kyra Burke, Chloe Curtis, Lorena Garcia, Samantha Garcia, Evelyn Gonzalez, Lyndsey Mull, Kelly Parsons and Alexandra Young.
The 2015 Lion men, meanwhile, are underclassmen heavy with 12 combined freshmen and sophomores on a squad of 17. Don't count the upperclassmen out, however, as seniors Lance Capel, Michael Duncan and Ryan Vargas bring experience and maturity to the young squad.
All told, the men, who placed second in the team standings at last year's Mark Covert Classic, return six of their top seven finishers from the 2014 WCC Championship. That returning core includes sophomores Jack Polerecky, who set an LMU freshman record at the 2015 WCC meet, and Christopher Fredlund.
