NEW ORLEANS - Loyola Marymount women's cross country is among the West Region's top teams in 2007, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday in its preseason regional polls. The Lion women rank 15th in the West Region.

"Polls don't really mean that much, especially this early in the season," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "However, it's definitely nice to receive some recognition for what we're doing. As always, our goal is to continue to improve and this is proof that people are starting to take notice. This is the first time in our program's history that we have ever received a preseason ranking and it just serves to lend some legitimacy to our program. It's a great way to start out the season."

The regional ranking comes on the heels of LMU's second place team finish at the Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday in Irvine, Calif. Senior Laura Mickelson won the individual title Saturday as well.

On the men's side, LMU topped host UC Irvine in Saturday's invitational, and the Anteaters appear in the 13th spot in today's regional ranking.

"Today's poll is also a nice sign for our men's squad, who has already posted a victory over a regionally-ranked team this season," Guerrero said. "There is no reason our men can't continue to climb as well."

Both LMU squads return to action this Saturday morning at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
