Lions Look to Continue Momentum at UC Riverside
Cross-country looks to continue its impressive start with a full squad running in Riverside.
Sept. 15, 2011
Coming off of a successful run at the Asics Season Opener in Brea, Calif., Lions junior Sterling Lockert describes his team as "incredible." His confidence comes from the fact that only a small group of teammates ran the course in Brea. This Saturday morning, the full LMU Cross Country team will race at the UC Riverside Invitational in Riverside, Calif. as the team begins its full competitive fall schedule. The UC Riverside Agricultural Operations course should provide a good challenge for the Lions with its few rolling hills and hard packed dirt. Lockert is looking to duplicate a great performance in Riverside again this year on a course where he ran a season high 25:13.8 in the 8k in 2010.
The women's team is coming off a win at the Asics Season Opener. A partial squad, led by sophomore Veronica Wallington, had a successful 3-5-6-12-13 finish at the reconfigured course in Carbon Canyon Park. Wallington was joined by Caroline Draper, Brieanna Delaney, Brittnie Munoz and freshman Aeoleone Bristow as the top five finishers for the women.
LMU's men were led in Brea by freshman Michael Vorgitch who finished at 26.39 in his first collegiate race. Fellow freshman Jonathan Miller came in next for the Lions followed by Greg Innes, Oran Arms and Michael Carlone. The men's team finished in the top third of the meet, placing 7th of nineteen teams.
Last year, the Lions had a strong showing at the UC Riverside Invitational placing 3rd in the women's invitational race and 4th in the men's race, while a second squad of LMU women won the open race. LMU's performance was highlighted by senior Tara Erdmann who won the Invitational race in 16:45.
With 3 meets in the next 4 weeks, LMU is looking forward to a good run this Saturday to propel the team forward towards the WCC championships and NCAA regionals and finals.
The first women's 6k race will begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by the first men's 8k race at 8:15 a.m. The women's 5k race will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a second men's 8k race at 9:30 a.m.
For those planning to attend the race, tickets are on sale for $5.00 for ages 12 and over. Children ages 11 and under are free.
From the 215/60 freeway, exit Martin Luther King and go West. Turn left at the Canyon Crest traffic light and travel approximately 300 meters to the course entrance. For parking in Lot 30, continue straight on Martin Luther King.
Parking is in Lot 30 located in the Northwest corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Canyon Crest Drive. Shuttles will be available to transport spectators from the parking lot to the course and back to the parking lot. A $5 fee is payable to the attendant on site. If no attendant is present, please use the dispenser located in the lot.
