Mustang Challenge Up Next for Lions

LOS ANGELES -- LMU Cross Country will travel to Santa Clarita, Calif. this Saturday, Sept. 22 for the Mustang Challenge hosted by The Master’s College.

LION TRACKS

The LMU women, currently ranked 13th in the West Region, finished second at the WCC Preview Meet in Portland, Ore. last Saturday. LMU’s men finished fourth at the site of the upcoming WCC Championships. Senior Sheree Shea finished second overall in the women's competition. Shea turned in the best time for a WCC runner in the 6k race. Her time of 21:06.12 was only seconds behind overall winner Caroline Austin of Washington State. Senior Caroline Draper was the second finisher for the Lions, running a time of 21:42.37 which was 10th overall. Senior Cassandra Salazar and freshman Kelli Sugimoto finished 12th and 13th overall, respectively. Salazar set a new personal record, running the race in 21:47.12. Sugimoto finished in 21:47.46 in her first 6k race. The Lions' fifth, sixth, and seventh runners to cross the finish line did so as a pack finishing 17th through 19th. Callie Mulgannon and Sarah Vitug crossed at 22:03.68 and 22:04.37, respectively. Freshman Melanie Joerger was close behind at 22:10.50.


 

 

LMU finished second behind conference rival Gonzaga. The Lions had a score of 53 (2-10-12-13-16), second-best amongst the seven teams competing.

The LMU men set several personal records at Fernhill Park. Junior Weston Strum finished 10th in the 8k race, with a time of 23:38.47, a personal record. Senior Sterling Lockert ran the course in 23:49, also a new PR. Sophomore Daniel Gibson finished 22nd in 23:56.12. Senior Tyre Johnson also set a new personal record of 24:14.09 for 33rd overall. Michael Vorgitch finished the race in 24:22.31, a new personal best for the sophomore.

Junior Drew Dalton completed the race with a time of 24:48.22, 47th overall. Junior Mike Evans set a personal record time of 25:22.81 for 64th. LMU placed fourth in the six-team race. The University of Portland finished first.

RANK ‘EM

The LMU Women's Cross Country team is ranked 13th in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) West Regional poll released Monday.

The West Coast Conference was well represented in the latest regional polls with more than half of its teams ranked: LMU, San Francisco, Portland, and Gonzaga in the West Regional poll and BYU in the Mountain Regional poll.

ONE SEASON OPENER, THREE TROPHIES

The Lions started the 2012 season on a winning note with twin victories at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Senior Sheree Shea returned after a missing most of last year as a redshirt with an individual win in the women's 5k race, leading the LMU women to a second consecutive title at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. The scoring five for the LMU men all placed in the top 11 overall giving the Lions a low score of 24 (2-3-6-8-11), beating second-place Long Beach State by 42 points.

LMU's men were lead by junior Weston Strum who finished the 8k race fourth overall, finishing with a time of 25:17.8. Fellow junior Drew Dalton finished close behind in 25:27.8 for fifth overall. Senior Sterling Lockert completed in a time of 25:45.1 for an eighth-place finish. Tyre Johnson was next in order, running a 25:49.5. Sophomore Michael Vorgitch closed out the LMU scoring five with a time of 26:01.3, for 11th. Sophomore transfer Daniel Gibson had a time of 26:17.4 in his first race as a Lion, for 15th overall in the race. Freshman Michael Duncan made his LMU debut finishing in 26:34.1, which was 25th overall. The Lions beat a field of 14 colleges and universities which included fellow WCC member San Diego who finished 13th.

On the women's side, Shea ran a time of 17:54.3, winning the race by a little under two seconds. Senior Cassandra Salazar and senior transfer Callie Mulgannon crossed the finish line within seconds of each other for sixth and seventh place. Salazar ran a time of 18:24.1, while Mulgannon completed at 18:26.7. Freshman Kelli Sugimoto finished her first collegiate race in 10th-place in 18:40.6. Senior Caroline Draper crossed at 18:44.5 for 13th.

Sarah Vitug finished in 19:16.9 for 18th overall in her first race with the Lions. Freshman Evelyn Gonzalez ran the 5k course in 19:20.6 for 19th. LMU defeated second-place Long Beach State by 15 points. The 13-team field for the women also included San Diego, won finished fourth overall.
