Sept. 27, 2007

LOS ANGELES - After taking last weekend off from competition, Loyola Marymount cross country returns to action this Saturday at the 34th annual Stanford Invitational. Much of the day will be reserved for high school races, but the collegiate runners will take the stage in four races beginning at 4:15 p.m. on the Stanford Golf Course.

The 34th edition of the Stanford Invitational will continue the tradition of high-level competition, featuring many of the top men's and women's athletes challenging for team and individual honors on the Stanford Golf Course. Student-athletes representing over 45 teams will compete in the collegiate races. The men will compete in the 8,000 meters on the long course, while the women will race 6,000 meters. Also, the invitational will feature both men and women on the 4,000 meters short course.

The women's field includes the nation's best, with top-ranked Stanford serving as host. The 22nd-ranked Baylor team will also challenge the field, entering a full squad in the 6,000 meter race. The Bears have already collected two team wins this season, anchored by All-American Nichole Jones. Cal, ranked ninth in the West Region, will also race squads in both the 6,000 and 4,000 meters. California claimed a runner-up finish earlier this season at the San Francisco Invitational, led by Chelsea Reilly and Rebecca Yau who finished second and fourth, respectively.

The Lions, led by the one-two punch of Laura Mickelson and Tara Erdmann, have women entered in the long course race only. Mickelson finished third in the event in 2006.

The collegiate men's races also feature some of the top teams in the nation, including the sixth-ranked host Cardinal and 23rd-ranked Cal Poly. Regionally-ranked UC Santa Barbara (10th) and Long Beach State (15th) will also compete. The LMU men will enter a team in the 8k and a few younger runners in the 4k short course.
