SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- LMU senior Sheree Shea has been named West Coast Conference Runner of the Month for September, the conference announced on Thursday. Shea finished the month with a seventh-place finish at the Stanford Invitational, the best finish for a WCC runner at the meet.
The San Diego native began the month with an individual win at the Mark Covert Classic in Brea, Calif. hosted by Cal State Fullerton. With a time of 17:54.3 in the 5k race, she led her team to an overall win to start the 2012 cross country season. Shea followed up her winning performance in Brea with a second-place finish at the WCC Preview Race in Portland, Ore. The senior finished with the best time for a WCC runner at the meet, leading the LMU women’s team to a second-place result.
This past Saturday Shea came in seventh at the Stanford Invitational, once again the best result for a WCC runner in the race. She guided the Lions’ women’s team to sixth-place in the race.
Coming off a redshirt year in 2011, Shea has had a blistering start this season. She won her first WCC Runner of the Month award in September 2010 following two top-ten finishes in the that month, to begin a season that resulted in a third-place finish at the WCC Championship. Shea’s honor this month marks the fourth consecutive Runner of the Month award won by a member of the LMU women’s cross country team. Last year, Tara Erdmann swept the award for the season, winning in September, October, and November.
The Lions will be lace up their running shoes this Saturday, Oct. 6 at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The meet begins at 9:00 a.m.
