Final Tune-Up Good Test for Lions
Saturday's Cal Poly Invitational will give the Lions a final benchmark before the October 28 WCC Championships.

Los Angeles, Calif. - Saturday's Cal Poly Invitational will serve as a final tune-up for the Lions before the 2006 West Coast Conference Championships at the end of the month. Loyola Marymount cross country has entered a total of 19 Lions - eight men and 11 women - for Saturday's race at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The women will run a 5k, while the men will run the 8k course.
Among the field on the women's side will be eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, Kentucky, Fresno State, Pacific, Cal Poly, and WCC foes Pepperdine and San Diego. Probably the best match-up for the Lions, the West Region's 10th-ranked team Oregon State will also participate. "Running against Oregon State will be a good test for our women to see what we are really made of," Guerrero said.
The eighth-ranked Gauchos are expected to field a "B" squad, running four or less of their top-7 runners.
On the men's side, the Lions will face the host Mustangs, Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara, Kentucky, and the WCC's Pepperdine and San Diego. Like the UCSB women, the Mustangs are nationally-ranked (30th), but are also expected to run a "B" squad. The regionally-ranked Gaucho men will likely do the same.
At the 2005 Cal Poly Invitational, the LMU women finished second of 12 teams. Laura Mickelson led the returning Lions, finishing seventh overall. The Lion men finished fourth of eight with Reynaldo Barrera leading all returning Lions. The men set a course record time of 2:19:19 last season and will look to top that on Saturday.
The Cal Poly Invitational Saturday will be the Lions' final tune-up before October 28th's WCC Championship.
