Lions Fly to Indiana to Run Down the Competition

Weston Strum led the Lions last year at the NCAA Pre-Nationals

LOS ANGELES - This morning, fourteen members of the Lions' cross country team and their coaches flew out to Indiana to prepare for the NCAA Pre-Nationals, which take place this Sunday. Seven men and seven women will race for the Lions at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, hosted by Indiana State University.

This Week: NCAA Pre-National Invitational

Location: Terre Haute, Ind.

Date: Sunday, Oct. 16

Times: 8:00 a.m. (PT) - Men's Race, 8:40 a.m. (PT) - Women's Race

Last Year's Result: Women - 25th, Men - 32nd

Last year at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, the Lions' women placed 25th as a team, while the men in came 32nd. The women were led by junior Tara Erdmann who placed 4th overall in 20:27 over the 6k distance. The men were led by sophomore Weston Strum who placed 113th overall in 25:10 in the 8k race.

The Lions' women are ranked 12th in the West, and the men are ranked 15th in the West in the current USTFCCCA poll. This year, the competition at the Pre-Nationals will be intense as fewer teams will run compared to previous years, but the competitors will highly ranked. Six of the top 30 men's teams in the nation, and 29 regionally ranked men's teams will compete. In addition, four of the women's top 30 and 29 regionally ranked women's teams will be in Indiana.

The Lions are coming off of strong 5th place finishes at the Stanford Invitational, after back-to-back wins at the Asics Season Opener in Brea, Calif. and the UC Riverside Invitational.
