San Bruno, Calif. - Sophomore Sara Mickelson has been named the West Coast Conference Cross Country Female Athlete of the Month, the conference announced today. Mickelson and the Lions are on pace to challenge for a conference title this Saturday at the WCC Championship.
With today's announcement, Mickelson becomes the first-ever Lion to earn the selection.
Honored for her athletic performance during October, the El Segundo, Calif. native led the Lions at the Cal Poly Invitational, crossing the line in a career-best 18:01.8 for a top-five finish. Mickelson finished ahead of 2003 West Coast Conference Individual Champion and reigning WCC Runner of the Month Tiffanie Marley of San Diego.
Mickelson helped LMU finished second of 12 teams. The team time of 92:42, (an average of 18:32 for the scoring five) smashed the record of 95:20 (19:04 average) that LMU set just one month ago at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational. The new record means the Lions set a new team time mark every time they stepped onto the course this season.
UC Santa Barbara did run a "B" squad at the Cal Poly event, but the second place Lions defeated every other Division I team's top runners with the exception of winners UC Irvine. Pepperdine finished sixth, while San Diego placed seventh.
Mickelson's selection gives the Lions momentum heading into this weekend's conference championship. The race will begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Belmont, Calif.'s Crystal Springs Course.
