Three Lions Named to WCC All-Academic Team

Dec. 12, 2003

San Bruno, Calif. - Loyola Marymount's Kenny Arehart, Bernie Ochoa, and Andrew Thompson have been selected to the West Coast Conference's All-Academic team. With three student-athletes receiving the honor, men's cross country places the greatest percentage of their squad on the conference team of any LMU fall sport.

Arehart, a 3.67 animation student, led the Lions in their first three meets. He posted a season-best time of 27:06 at the UC Irvine Invitational in September. The sophomore's 27:17 mark at the WCC Championships was good for a 23rd place finish.

Ochoa, who has a 3.73 cumulative grade point average in physics/chemistry, was the Lions' number two runner for much of the season. His 27:08 mark at the UC Riverside Invitational was a season-best time, and his time of 27:31 is the seventh-best all-time LMU mark at the WCC Championships.

Thompson, a 3.45 junior business administration major, came on strong toward the end of the 2003 season. He was the Lions's second finisher at the WCC Championships, and his and Arehart's mark of 27:17 ranks fourth on LMU's all-time list of top WCC Championship times. His season-best time came at the UC Riverside Invitational, where he finished in 27:00.

The team, nominated by sports information directors and selected by the conference, recognizes student-athletes with legitimate athletic credentials and have achieved a cumulative 3.2 or higher grade point average. The nominee must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one full academic year completed at the nominating institution and have participated in 50 percent of the meets.
