LOS ANGELES - A two-out, bases-loaded double off the bat of LMU junior Eric Farris broke open a 3-3 tie game in the sixth inning on Opening Day at Page Stadium. The Lions (1-0) topped Sacramento State (0-1) 9-5 in the opener for both teams Friday afternoon.

With two outs and teammates Michael Glomb (hit by pitch), DeAndre Miller (walk), and Brian Wilson (single to left) loading the bases in the sixth, Farris' shot down the right field line gave the Lions the lead for good. Farris finished the day 2-for-5 with the three RBI and some key defensive plays at second base.

LMU trailed 2-0 in the third before adding one run in the bottom of the frame on a double by Wilson. Sean Dovel tied the game at three in the fifth on a two-run home run over the fence in left center.

Starting pitcher Brad Meyers (1-0) earned the win after throwing six innings and striking out three.

Sacramento State starter Alvaro Orozco went five innings, but it was John Schlager (0-1) who suffered the loss after giving up the go-ahead runs.

The Lions tallied 13 hits in the Opening Day win, getting hits from seven of their nine starters.

After taking the 6-3 lead on Farris' shot, the Lions added three more runs in the seventh, scoring for a third straight frame. With one out, A.J. LaMonda, Angelo Songco, and Ryan Wheeler strung together three straight hits. Wilson's third hit of the day scored each of them to put the Lions up 9-4.

Lee Roberts, Nathan Keadle, and Joe Zeller each threw an inning out of the pen for the Lions, holding Sacramento State to just two final runs in the ninth. Roberts held the Hornets hitless with a strikeout in the seventh.

Miller equaled a school record, drawing four walks in the game. Four other Lions have accomplished that feat over the years, the most recent being Josh Whitesell (2001-03) in 2002.

The two freshmen to earn a start on Opening Day, Wheeler (3B) and Songco (LF), finished a combined 2-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Left fielder Ryan Blair led the way for the Hornets, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.

The win made gave the Lions their fifth straight Opening Day win at Page Stadium. The run features Opening Day victories over Cal (2005), UC Riverside (2004), Cal State Northridge (2001), Cal State Dominguez Hills (1999), and now Sacramento State.

LMU and Sacramento State will continue the three-game Opening Weekend series Saturday at Page Stadium. A pair of left-handers in Daniel Macias (LMU) and Mick Joyce (SAC) is slated to start on the mound. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. Fans who can't make it to the park can follow all of the action free of charge with both GameTracker and live audio on Lions' All-Access at www.LMULions.com.
