Lions Clinch Series with 8-1 Win

Feb. 3, 2007

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - In similar style to yesterday's Opening Day victory, the Lions scored a combined seven runs in their final two at bats to top Sacramento State 8-1 at Page Stadium. This time, it was senior DeAndre Miller's two-run double that broke open the 1-1 game in the seventh. The win clinched the Opening Weekend series for the Lions (2-0), as they go up 2-0 on the Hornets (0-2).

Junior Michael Glomb started the seventh by drawing a walk from Sacramento State reliever Cyrus Sarraf. Freshman Angelo Songco then doubled to left center, putting runners on second and third for the Lions. That set up Miller's heroics, has his extra-base hit broke open the game for LMU.

Just like yesterday's Opening Day, the Hornets scored first, when David Flores singled through the left side to plate Gabe Jacobo, who doubled to start the fourth inning.

The Lions made it 1-1 in the fifth, when Miller's sacrifice fly scored Glomb.

LMU added four runs in the eighth after batting through the lineup. Songco's second extra-base hit of the day, this time a triple, plated two of the four runs that inning. Glomb's sacrifice fly and Miller's single accounted for the other two runs.

The Lions got a great outing from their entire pitching staff. The LMU pitchers held the Hornets to one run and struck out 10 while walking just one. Senior Daniel Macias got it started for the Lions, throwing five innings and striking out six.

Junior Kevin Hernandez (1-0) earned the win after holding the Hornets scoreless and striking out two in the sixth and seventh innings.

Andy Beal and Xavier Esquivel had identical pitching lines, each tossing one inning with one strikeout.

Sarraf (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hornets after taking over for left-handed starter Mick Joyce. Joyce went 5.2 innings, allowing six hits.

Miller finished 2-for-2 with four RBI. Eric Farris (3-for-5), Brian Wilson (2-for-3), and Songco (2-for-4) also had multiple-hit outings for LMU.

Jacobo and Flores each went 3-for-4 for Sacramento State.

The Lions clinched the three-game series with the 8-1 win Saturday. The teams will conclude the series Sunday with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. Fans who can't make it to the park can follow all of the action free of charge on Gametracker and Lions' All-Access at www.LMULions.com.
