Down to its last strike on Saturday night on the road at Arizona State, LMU(5-6) rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 3-2 victory over the Sun Devils (6-4) to even a three-game series from Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Phil Caulfield came to the plate with a runner at second and two out with the Lions trailing 2-1, and with a 0-2 count, Caulfield shot a ball into the gap for a game-tying RBI-triple. The hit was Caulfield’s third of the night, as we went 3-for-5 with a run scored and the RBI. Now with the go-ahead run at third, freshman Nick Sogard came up clutch, punching what proved to be the game-winner into right field to bring home Caulfield.

Sogard also finished the game with three hits, going 3-for-4 with the RBI and a sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter Steven Chavez got the ninth inning going with a single to centerfield before Dylan Hirsch took over on the bases and scored the game-tying run.

Right-hander Codie Paiva was credited with the win after tossing the final 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. The native of Hawaii allowed just one hit over the stint, eventually retiring the final seven he faced to improve to 2-0.

Left-hander Brenton Arriaga tossed another gem in a no-decision, allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

Spencer Van Scoyoc was in line for the victory headed into the ninth, as the starter dealt 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Reagan Todd, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning, was asked to try to record the six-out save, but the lefty ran into the trouble in the ninth and was ultimately charged with the loss to fall to 0-1.

Prior to the ninth-inning heroics, Billy Wilson had collected the biggest hit for LMU, tying the game at one run apiece with a two-out RBI-double in the fifth.

LMU will look to earn the series victory tomorrow as Cory Abbott takes the mound at 11:30 a.m. PT.
