AUSTIN, Texas -
After a pair of rainouts to start the weekend, LMU (5-7) and Texas (5-8) finally squared-off at Texas' UFCU Disch Falk Field in Austin, Texas on Sunday. The two teams played a doubleheader, salvaging a pair of games from the three-game series. The Lions earned a 1-0 victory in a pitcher's duel in game one, earning the win on a Scott Harkin RBI-double in the top of the ninth.
Cullen Mahoney scored the game's lone run, reaching on a single to right before moving to second on an Alex Guthrie sacrifice bunt. The junior transfer advanced 90 more feet on the ensuing play, scampering into third on a wild pitch to set the table for Harkin's second double of the year. Harkin finished the game 2-for-4.
Freshman Colin Welmon got the start and tossed seven strong scoreless innings, scattering three hits while not walking a batter and striking out a pair. The right-hander gave way to junior Aaron Griffin in the eighth, and Griffin threw the next two scoreless innings en route to moving to 2-2 in the win-loss column.
Erich Weiss led the Texas offense in the first game, finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Nathan Thornhill got the start for the Longhorns, going 7.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts before not factoring in the decision. Hoby Milner pitched the next two-thirds of an inning, allowing Mahoney to reach before eventually being tagged with the loss when Parker French surrendered the double off the bat of Harkin.
The two teams continued play on Sunday, meeting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game in the second game of the doubleheader.
